Runway
AI video generation suite that combines several text-to-video and image-to-video models with editing tools like inpainting and motion control, billed through monthly credits.
Pros
- + Generation and editing tools live in one browser app, so you can fix a clip without switching tools
- + Several video models available side by side (its own Gen-4.5 plus partner models)
- + Paid plans export without a watermark
Cons
- − Credits run out fast: the Standard plan's monthly credits cover under a minute of Gen-4.5 video
- − Unused credits don't roll over, so a light month is still full price
- − Premium models cost two to three times as many credits per second as the base model
Runway is an AI video studio that runs in the browser. You write a prompt or upload a reference image, choose a model, and get back a short clip. Around that sits a set of editing tools, so you can adjust a generation instead of re-rolling it from scratch.
How it works
Every generation costs credits, and the price depends on the model and clip length. At the time of writing, Runway’s own Gen-4.5 costs 60 credits per 5 seconds. The partner and premium models cost noticeably more per second. Your subscription tier sets how many credits you get each month.
Pricing, in practice
The main thing to understand about Runway’s pricing is how many seconds of video a plan actually buys. We did that math in the Runway credits explained breakdown. For a head-to-head with Google’s model, see Runway vs Google Veo.
Who it’s for
Runway suits creators who generate a small number of shots and want to polish each one in the same tab. It’s a weaker fit for high-volume automated b-roll, because a fixed monthly credit pool can run out halfway through a batch.
