Best for
Thumbnails and hero images where visual impact matters more than generating dozens of consistent in-video images
Pros
- + Consistently the strongest out-of-the-box aesthetic quality of any mainstream image generator
- + Excellent for cinematic, painterly, and atmospheric thumbnail or scene art
- + Active community and huge volume of shared prompts to learn from
Cons
- − No free tier anymore — you're paying before you know if it fits your workflow
- − Historically Discord-first, which is an awkward interface for production pipelines (a web app now exists, with fewer power-user prompt tools)
- − Weaker at exact character/style consistency across many images than tools built specifically for that
Midjourney remains the reference point for AI image quality — when a generated image looks unmistakably “AI art” in a good way, it’s often Midjourney’s aesthetic people are describing.
How it works
Prompt in, four image variations out, with upscale and remix options. The web app has closed some of the gap with Discord’s power-user prompting tools, but Discord is still where most detailed prompt engineering happens.
Who it’s for
Thumbnail generation and single hero images where visual punch drives click-through rate. For dozens of consistent in-video images across a whole script, Leonardo AI or ChatGPT Images are usually a better fit.
